Derenbecker leaves Privateers

Junior Matt Derenbecker left the UNO men’s basketball team, marking the third time the former Country Day standout has departed a college basketball program.

Privateers coach Mark Slessinger said Wednesday that Derenbecker left for medical reasons, but would not provide details. It’s not known whether Derenbecker will continue as a student at UNO.

“This is a tough day for our program, Matt and his family,” Slessinger said. “We sincerely hope that this time in our program will benefit him positively moving forward.”

Derenbecker, a two-time Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year (2009-10), signed with LSU out of Country Day. As a freshman, he started 16 games, averaging 6.5 points, but transferred after the season to Dayton. There, he sat out one season per NCAA regulations and played last season, averaging 4.5 points.

Derenbecker then transferred to UNO and was granted an NCAA waiver that allowed him to play during the 2013-14 season. This season, he averaged 10.5 points, second on the team.

UNO (4-8, 1-3) hosts Lamar (1-15, 0-4) in Southland Conference play Thursday at Lakefront Arena, part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader starting at 5:30 p.m.
