Our Views: Local issues on ballots Our Views: Local issues on ballots Advocate story April 19, 2014 Comments It’s Election Day across Louisiana, with dozens of local offices to be chosen in many cities and towns, and a number of significant tax proposals on ballots. Among the municipal elections are those in Kenner, Slidell and Harahan in the New Orleans area and in Central city in East Baton Rouge Parish, along with Arnaudville, St. Martinville and Franklin in Acadiana. There also are some special elections in various parishes, including a new coroner in St. Tammany Parish. An election that is drawing particular attention is in Port Allen, where recalled Mayor Deedy Slaughter in seeking a comeback in a four-candidate field. Full election information is available from the Secretary of State’s Office. We hope voters in East Baton Rouge Parish and in Livingston Parish will renew two taxes on today’s ballot. One is for the Baton Rouge Recreation and Park Commission, renewing in one proposition two earlier property taxes supporting BREC’s programming. In Livingston, renewal of a property tax for libraries is on the ballot. These are public services that enhance the quality of life in the region, and we urge voters to renew those taxes.
