Vehicle crashes on Earhart, killing driver

A traffic wreck killed an unidentified man in his 50s Tuesday night, according to New Orleans police.

About 6:45 p.m., police said, a four-door Lincoln was traveling fast westbound on Earhart Boulevard when it struck the cement median and a tree near South Broad Street, then flipped over.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two male passengers in the Lincoln, ages 21 and 27, were taken to a hospital with injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

Man accused of killing woman still in hospital

A man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in front of two children and then trying to burn down her 7th Ward residence remained in the hospital Wednesday, New Orleans police said.

Police allege Anthony Jones, 48, stabbed his girlfriend, Renata Vaughn, 36, to death in the 2400 block of Touro Street on Monday night and set fire to her half of a double shotgun.

Jones was arrested at the scene but was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Police said they will book him on second-degree murder and two counts of cruelty to a juvenile when he is released.

Man booked in June killing in N.O. East

A man was arrested last week in connection with a June shooting in New Orleans East that claimed the life of a 21-year-old man.

Police said a witness or witnesses placed Robert Mitchell, 19, at the scene of the shooting near Francis Drive and Ransom Stret on June 3. A witness also told police, according to a warrant, that Mitchell had a firearm moments before Brandon Soraparu was shot.

Soraparu “was shot during a physical altercation in which he was not a participant,” according to a warrant.

Police said they scoured the area for Mitchell immediately after the shooting, but he escaped. Another suspect remains at large, according to a warrant application sworn by Homicide Detective Joseph Jefferson.

Mitchell was arrested Friday and remains in jail on $400,000 bail.

Robberies reported in Mid-City and CBD

New Orleans police said two men who were robbed at gunpoint and knifepoint in separate incidents reported the crimes Tuesday.

In the first case, police said, a 29-year-old man told them he was standing in front of the Capri Motel in the 2400 block of Tulane Avenue shortly after midnight Sunday when three men approached him with a gun and demanded his property. He said he handed over a purse containing cash and an iPhone.

Police also reported that a 21-year-old man was robbed near Lafayette and Carondelet streets about 8 p.m. Tuesday. An unknown man with a knife demanded his belongings and then fled, police said.

Teen raped his young sisters, police allege

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and accused of sexually assaulting his 6- and 8-year-old sisters on Tuesday, New Orleans police said. Police gave few details but reported the location as on Lafitte Street.

Police also said a 14-year-old girl was raped by her mother’s ex-boyfriend about noon Tuesday on Josephine Street.
