Jefferson Parish deputies fatally shoot man after chase from Oakwood Mall into New Orleans

A police chase that began at a mall on the West Bank of Jefferson Parish went into New Orleans’ Central City neighborhood Monday night and ended with Jefferson deputies fatally shooting a man they said tried to back a car into them, Sheriff Newell Normand said.

Normand said the incident began about 7:55 p.m., when three women told a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy on a paid security detail at Oakwood Mall that a man had pointed a gun at them, Normand said.

The deputy confronted and grabbed the man, whose identity was not released, but he broke away, ran to the mall’s parking lot and got into a car, the sheriff told WWL-TV and other media outlets.

The mall’s security team gave a description of the car to the Sheriff’s Office, Normand said.

The car was later spotted on the elevated West Bank Expressway, where it “rammed” into a Sheriff’s Office vehicle, setting off a chase across the Crescent City Connection, Normand said.

Normand said two deputies were following the car closely when it “hit a curb and ran into a telephone pole” near Simon Bolivar Avenue and Philip Street, almost 5 miles from Oakwood and about eight blocks from St. Charles Avenue, where two Carnival parades rolled Monday night.

One of the deputies had pulled up within 20 yards of the car following the crash, when suddenly, the vehicle’s rear lights came on, indicating it had been put in reverse, Normand said. The deputies then opened fire on the car and killed the man, he said.

An unidentified woman also in the car was taken to a hospital after she apparently was injured by shattered glass, either from the crash or from the deputies’ bullets, Normand said.

The New Orleans Police Department’s “use of force team,” which responds to incidents in which officers fire their weapons, was at the scene. A gun reportedly was found in the suspect’s car.
