Harvey man gets 15 years for injuring 3-month-old son after shaking, dropping, throwing him

A Harvey man was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison for shaking, dropping and throwing his 3-month-old son, damaging his brain.

Jeffery Lebouef Jr., of Manhattan Boulevard, pleaded guilty earlier this week to second-degree cruelty to a juvenile in connection with a November incident that landed the child in Children’s Hospital in New Orleans.

Lebouef, 24, entered his plea before Judge Scott Schlegel of the 24th Judicial District Court in Gretna, according to Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick’s office.

Schlegel also barred Lebouef from contacting his son’s mother.

Lebouef told police he was alone with the child at home Nov. 4 when the boy began having seizures, but he denied knowing what caused the injuries.

The boy’s mother returned home and called a doctor, and Children’s Hospital staff notified the police after the couple brought him in. They had noticed the child appeared to have suffered similar injuries in the past, Connick’s office said in a news release.

The mother told detectives that Lebouef had shown animosity toward the child because he questioned whether he was the father.

He ultimately confessed to shaking the child, dropping him off a bed and throwing him two feet into a bassinet, Connick’s office said.

The baby’s mother testified Friday that her son suffers from lingering effects of the shaking and may need surgery as a result of the incident.

Assistant District Attorney Lindsay Truhe prosecuted the case.
