Actor Anthony Mackie to reign as Bacchus 2016

Actor Anthony Mackie will reign as Bacchus in the superkrewe’s Feb. 4 parade, the organization announced Friday.

“This year we are pleased to have a Bacchus who is both a nationally recognized star and a New Orleans native,” said Clark Brennan, the krewe’s captain, in a news release. “Anthony is a local success story and a great representative of the rich art, culture and music talent we have in New Orleans.”

The superkrewe will roll 31 floats bearing 1,230 riders onto the Uptown parade route the Sunday before Mardi Gras. Signature floats include the Bacchasaurus, Bacchagator and the 120-foot long Bacchatality, along with King Kong, Queen Kong and Baby Kong. The theme of the parade is “Flights of Delight.”

Mackie attended Warren Easton High School and NOCCA before moving to North Carolina to finish high school. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City. He has appeared in television, film and stage roles, including several roles in Marvel films such as “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”; “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Antman,” along with leading two Spike Lee films and “The Hurt Locker,” “Million Dollar Baby” and “Notorious.”

Past actors and celebrities who have reigned as Bacchus include John C. Reilly (2015), Will Ferrell (2012), Drew Brees (2010), and Val Kilmer (2009).
