Lusher, St. Martin’s students take top honor in Silver Scribe competition

Jamal Melancon, of Lusher High School in New Orleans, and Andrew Lang, of St. Martin’s Episcopal High School in Metairie, were the top winners in the Tom Bell Silver Scribe Competition held Feb. 15 at Loyola University New Orleans.

The daylong journalism competition drew dozens of students from six area high schools. The event was sponsored by the Loyola University New Orleans School of Mass Communication and the New Orleans Press Club.

Professional journalists served as judges for various categories, including best news story, best news photograph and best overall newspaper.

Melancon, a senior, won first place in sports writing and second place in news writing. He also won first place in sportswriting and third place in newswriting in the Maroon and Gold Awards, which are awards recognizing work published in the school newspaper throughout the year. He is on the staff of Lusher’s paper The Post-Deluvian, which won best online publication.

Lang, also a senior, won third place in newswriting, third place in feature writing and second place in the photography I category. St. Martin’s also won the sweepstakes awards for most points amassed by one school in Saturday’s competition.
