Dumpster fire damages three Jefferson Parish businesses Dumpster fire damages three Jefferson Parish businesses Advocate staff report Oct. 29, 2013 Comments A dumpster fire on Veterans and Houma boulevards Saturday damaged three businesses, according to Jefferson Parish Fire Department spokesman Joe Greco. Greco said firefighters responded to reports of a fire in the parking lot of Mattress Direct in the 4300 block of Veterans Boulevard about 1 p.m and found flames engulfing a dumpster. A second alarm was soon sounded because heavy smoke made it impossible for firefighters to tell if the fire had spread to adjacent buildings. One was a Brooklyn Pizzeria; the other was a Jimmy John’s owned by Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Greco said the front awning of Mattress Direct sustained fire damage and the other two businesses sustained water damage from the fire being extinguished. There were no injuries. Greco said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined but the dumpster was filled with roofing materials from work that was being done on the Jimmy John’s and Brooklyn Pizzeria. He said the fire was under control by 1:45 p.m.
