Man killed crossing South Claiborne Avenue

An unidentified man was killed Wednesday night when a car hit him while he crossed the street, New Orleans police said.

The victim was walking across South Claiborne Avenue near Gen. Taylor Street about 8:15 p.m. when a 23-year-old woman who drove a Toyota Camry hit him, said officer Garry Flot, a Police Department spokesman.

Paramedics brought the victim to the hospital where he later died. The driver of the Camry was not injured.

No charges were immediately filed against the driver, Flot said, noting that the accident remains under investigation.

Toxicology tests are pending. The Orleans Parish coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Fatality investigator Anthony Pontiff is in charge of the investigation.
