Mayor Landrieu to hold community meetings on 2015 budget

Mayor Mitch Landrieu will hold a series of community meetings in each City Council district beginning Monday night to discuss 2015 budget priorities.

Landrieu has held such meetings every year since becoming mayor in 2010.

The ostensible purpose is to solicit residents’ opinions on how the city should budget its money in the coming year. However, the meetings sometimes resemble general gripe sessions in which residents voice their opinions and complaints about a wide range of topics involving city government and its operations.

Landrieu will submit his 2015 budget to the City Council in October.

“Four years ago, we started these meetings to ensure that the people of New Orleans were included in the budgeting process,” Landrieu said in a news release. “These meetings allow us to hear directly from New Orleanians on what their priorities are, and allow us to stick to our budgeting principles: cut smart, reorganize and invest in the future.”

The city’s “budgeting for outcomes” process is designed to produce a more “citizen-driven” budget and to ensure improved government performance and accountability by allocating money to achieve the end results that residents have endorsed.

The mayor will hold one meeting with each district City Council member. They will be joined at the sessions by deputy mayors, the police and fire chiefs and many other department and agency heads.

The meetings all will start at 6 p.m.

From 5:30 to 6 p.m., residents will be able to talk one on one with representatives from various departments about programs, initiatives and specific concerns.

The schedule of meetings is:

Monday: District C — L.B. Landry High School, 1200 L.B. Landry Ave., Algiers.

Wednesday: District A — Lakeview Christian Center, 5885 Fleur de Lis Drive.

Thursday: District E — Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church, 5600 Read Blvd.

Aug. 26: District B — Touro Synagogue, 4238 St. Charles Ave.
