9th Ward nursery grows plants to save wetlands

Advocate staff photo by SHERRI MILLER -- The lodge, which has has been built to resemble a traditional shotgun house, will feature a completely screened in interior that overlooks the gardens of the Common Ground Relief Wetlands Nursery, whose Restoration program works to replant indigenous plants in their natural environment in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast. Most of the plants and trees currently inhabiting the nursery will be replanted in January through March of next year.

Unlike a commercial plant nursery, the Common Ground Relief nursery in the Lower 9th Ward stocks no rows of russet chrysanthemums, no hanging baskets of mandevillia.
